Spring Ahead Quilt Along - Introduction

The CV19 outbreak has changed a lot about how we do things - it’s a crazy time. So why not host a quilt along, to get together with some fellow quilters virtually? One thing that hasn’t changed is that “quilters gotta quilt” - so let’s do this!

Do you want to stay in the know about the quilt along each week via email? Click here to get on the Spring Ahead Email list!

I designed this quilt with the following in mind:

  1. We all have strips or fat quarter sets or scraps (or a combination of all 3) that we just had to have! Am I right? Those fabrics are just patiently waiting for us to use them!

  2. Classic, simple designs are always beautiful and versatile.

  3. At this time, we can encourage each other to finish this quilt! In order to get the pattern, join our Spring Ahead Facebook Group (find Poorhouse Quilt Designs on Facebook and join us)! Surprise your guild with your quilt finishes!

  4. There is no purchase required - this is a free quilt along! Let’s have fun!

Without further ado, here is the quilt:

Pictured is the coloring that I have designed for myself. However, it would be equally as cute in all scraps, halloween fabrics or patriotic fabrics! Be sure to get into the Facebook Group for the Quilt Along, I have provided a coloring page for you there! This way, if you would like your quilt to be a little more planned, you can do that.

I will be using some Michael Miller Fabrics Hash Dot:

What if we used a light background?

Please note: The sashing, the borders and the applique are all optional. You can decide create the quilt with blocks only. In the supply list, the border and the sashing requirements are in gray. Add the yardage together if you want to do it all. You can also craft your own scrappy border - the choices are endless.

This is a great time to remember your local quilt shop! Loads of them are offering curbside pickup and other services to help you stay safe and healthy through this next month. So if you are looking for pre-cut strips or a background - you might want to call your local quilt shop. My local quilt shop, Bits’n Pieces in Pelham, NH has a variety of strips ready for you (pictured below) - give them a call if you are local - here is the link to the shop. Let’s help our shops stay in business!

Other Recommended Supplies:

Thread for piecing and quilting – I recommend Aurifil 50 weight thread

Cotton Batting such as Bosal Foam and Fiber Katahdin

Rotary Cutter with brand new blade

Cutting mat and a variety of acrylic rulers

505 basting spray if you choose to spray baste your quilt

Sewing machine with a brand new needle

We will be cutting loads of strips. I am using Creative Grids rulers, but you can use whatever you have - I found that I need a 6” x24” rectangle ruler, along with a variety of rectangular and square rulers that I bet you have in your sewing area.
